Transition Model

Schlossberg's adult career development transitional model provides a framework for counselors to understand clients in their transitions. This model is comprised of three major parts:

1)Being able to approach the transition
2)Being able to identify coping resources
3) Providing strategies that can be used to empower the client

There are also several different types of transition, such as:

  • Anticipated Transition- These are the transitions that are foreseen and or predicted
  • Unanticipated Transition- These are the transitions that are not foreseen and are often unpredictable
  • Nonevent Transition- These happen when an event has been planned for but do not happen
The transition process can mimic the stages of grief. Clients experience disbelief, betrayal, confusion, and resolution throughout the process. Clients need the self to be understood, the situation addressed, support, and strategies.
